Summer at The Triangle House

Originally from the countryside in the UK, Amber Little-Campbell moved to New York twelve years ago. She and her husband began their life together in the city, but during the pandemic, they relocated upstate to their A-frame cabin  The Triangle House. Amber is the co-founder of Nation Fishing Co, and starting this month, she’ll also be launching and managing their beloved A-frame as a short-term rental, a longtime dream finally being brought to life.

Tucked deep in the woods of the Catskill Mountains, just 2.5 hours from NYC, Amber kindly sat down with us to share what summer looks like at this beautifully peaceful retreat.

Where is your summer home, and what drew you to this location?

The Triangle House is nestled in the woods of the Catskill Mountains, New York. When we set out to find a weekend retreat, we wanted a place close enough for easy getaways yet far enough to truly disconnect. The Catskills offered the perfect balance—beautiful landscapes, fresh air, and a slower pace that felt like a true escape from the energy of city life.

Do you have any cherished rituals or routines that mark the start of the summer season?

For us, the onset of summer is marked by the opening of the farm shops, the rivers and lakes becoming warm enough to swim in, and the peak of the fruit-picking season.

How does the design of your summer home differ from your main residence?

Our primary residence is a traditional farmhouse, a style that emerged in rural areas to support agricultural lifestyles. This design offers a spacious and functional living environment rooted in classic architecture, providing an ideal setting for raising our family.

In contrast, our weekend home is an A-frame house, characterized by its steeply angled roof that extends to the ground, forming a triangular "A" shape. This design results in sloped interior walls and an open floor plan, with loft area.

So, while our farmhouse offers a spacious and functional living environment—ideal for family living—our A-frame provides a unique, nature-oriented retreat with its distinctive architecture.

What scents remind you of summer, and how do you incorporate them into your home?

The scent of fresh flowers reminds me of summer. I love to incorporate this into our home by adding wildflowers from the garden, like lilac, or picking up fresh flowers from local farm shops. Clippings from our lilac bush fills the space with its natural fragrance and instantly brings the essence of summer inside.

What’s your favorite room or outdoor space, and how do you love to spend time there?

I love the living area, with its big wall of windows that look out to the woods. The view is always shifting with the seasons—lush greens in summer, golden hues in fall, and snow-covered branches in winter. It’s where the outdoors feels like an extension of the home, a space flooded with natural light, perfect for relaxing and unwinding.

How do you bring the essence of summer into your interiors?

In the summer, I love to embrace its effortless nature by incorporating linens, fresh flowers or branches from the garden and leave all the doors and windows open so the garden becomes an extension of the cabin.

What colours, textures, or materials define the feel of your summer retreat?

The interior has a neutral palette that enhances the natural light, making the space feel open and airy. Pops of color in our furnishings add warmth and character, while the shiplap walls maintain the charm of the cabin.

Is there a particular piece of furniture or décor item that embodies summer for you?

In our garden, the picnic bench serves as a central hub for family gatherings, weekend barbecues, and impromptu hang outs. Its sturdy design offers ample seating, making it ideal for hosting friends. Its multifunctional nature allows it to double as a workspace for gardening projects or a play area for Suki and her friends

What’s your ideal summer gathering at home—who’s there, what’s on the table, and what’s in the air?

My ideal summer gathering at the cabin would be dinner on a long trestle table in the garden, surrounded by my closest friends and their kids. A warm summer's evening, with a BBQ and an array of beautiful salads on the table.
